Pontian is a district in southwest Johor. It is located 62km from Johor Bahru, Johor. The capital was formerly a fishing village which has developed into a small town.


Pontian is noted for its variety of seafood which is sold at a reasonable price. Visitors from neighbouring towns and Singapore regularly visit Kukup, a fishing village about 20km from Pontian Kechil. Notable Wetland National Parks in Pontian include Tanjung Piai and Kukup Island.

���������� Tanjung Piai is also known as �The Southernmost Tip of Mainland Asia�. It is home to many species of mangrove plants and species of animals. Tanjung Piai State Park (Ref: 1289) wetland designated on 31/01/03; is a State Park consisting of coastal mangroves and intertidal mudflats.

���������� Pulau Kukup State Park (Ref: 1287) designated on 31st January 2003; is a mangrove island located at about 1 km offshore from the south-western region of the state of Johor, Peninsular Malaysia. It is a small mangrove island (approximately 647.2 ha) surrounded by mudflats (about 800 ha). The island experienced extensive harvesting for mangrove wood back in the 80′, however, wood extracting operations from this island had ceased since August 1993. Regeneration of mangrove tree species has indeed taken place since then.
